Count Althann's Gage

Count Althann's Gage

Before 1870 Old Greengage o.p. Syn. Reine Claude Conducta

Most famous of the colored gage plums. A seedling of Old Greengage, produced on the estate of Marie-Joseph, Count Althann at Swoyschitz in Bohemia, by his gardener Joachim Prochaska, a century and a half ago. The gardener sent his prodigy on to the noted plum fanciers Baron Trauttenberg and redoubtable Dr Gustaf Liegel, who made it known throughout the fruit world ... the rest is history.

Unfailingly productive, precocious bearing. The fruit is a true gage, flattened round and dark black, powdered with a white bloom, flesh greenish amber, sweet, dense; the largest of the colored gages. Early August. On Myro 29c.
