Low chill and self-fertile. Low-chill sweet cherries have been recently announced by fruit breeders, who would have us believe is a combination unknown until this moment ... not so! 'Cristobalina' has been known and grown by generations of cherry growers in Andalusia and Valencia, where winters are as mild as our own, as a reliable producer in every year. So it has performed for us. It demonstrates its indifference to winter by blooming here in mid-February, a month before any other sweet cherry - yet every year produces a full crop: self-fertile AND low-chill! The variety of choice for Southern California, both inland and by the coast, as well as in difficult locations of Central Coast and Bay Area. A single tree is sufficient to produce a large and early crop of dark purple, delicious sweet cherries. Thinning helps to make full-sized fruit, since every flower will produce a fruit. Guigne type with dark red flesh, juicy and sweet. Late May. Under 200 hours. On Mazard.
