Emperor Francis Joseph
This blonde sweet cherry is underappreciated both in the older literature and by current cherry growers. In bygone days, 'Emperor Francis' was a valuable white cherry for late in season. Inexplicably, the English authors spoke of it slightingly in comparison with 'Napoleon Bigarreau', to which we find it superior, but later, and less inclined to bacterial canker. Modern growers cannot find any yellow cherry to speak of except 'Rainier', which while larger, and earlier, is not nearly so juicy nor sweet as 'Emperor Francis', no matter how long 'Rainier' is left on the tree. Named to celebrate the accession of Franz Josef to the dual monarchy, which fairly dates this variety to the 1860s, an Austrian cherry that could well be our finest among those with yellow flesh and yellow skin. Mid July. On Mahaleb.
