George IV

George IV

Among the oldest surviving peach varieties in America, George IV was born on Manhattan Island in the shadow of Trinity Church in the 1820s ... must have been excellent indeed to have survived as a hand-me-down over two centuries. Middling-sized, skin greenish white, incompletely streaked with red. Flesh white, red at pit, melting, juicy, acidulous. More persons name it their favorite peach than any other. As the standard of comparison, the only heirloom peach planted in the peach breeding blocks of the pomology faculty at University of California, supplied to them by us twenty years ago. Early August. 800 hours. On Lovell.
