Our only fig of Smyrna type, Marabout requires caprification to mature its fruit. Native of Algeria, named for the notorious holy medicine-men of the Maghreb, marabout is known and esteemed throughout the west of North Africa.
Like the marabouts of legend, the fruits are dressed in darkest black. Fruits elongated and immense, flesh pinkish red, sweet. Not generous while young, the strict upright tree is productive with age, and ripens over a long season for Smyrna type. This variety provides an unerring test for presence of fig wasps in your area - if you plant it, they will come!
