If we were to suggest just one variety to introduce all the pleasures of the European plum to a gardener newcomer, it would surely be Pearl. Certainly the brightest, most cheerfully colored of the European Plums, Pearl is an orangeish yellow, washed with pink across its midsection; rather below middling size though highly productive, egg- or teardrop-shaped. Flesh is clear yellow, sweet and among the juiciest, with some gage flavor. We have no idea how long Pearl lasts on the tree, since our fruits are given no opportunity to linger untasted. A hybrid from Luther Burbank's Goldridge Farm, Sebastopol. We quote Hedrick, "... unsurpassed in quality by any other plum." It is not apparent how this fruit could have escaped the notice of gardeners of the past century. Late August. On Myro 29c.
