The dark-skinned version of the greengage is probably a spontaneous hybrid of gage x prune, dating back at least 300 years, certainly in France, where it is known as 'Reine Claude Violette'. The fruits ripen later than the generality of gages, and flesh is firmer, with an additionally richer flavor of anthocyanidin not found in greengages. H. V. Taylor in Britain wrote, "sweet, rich and excellent flavor.... An excellent dessert plum, and should be more widely grown in gardens." We find fruits of this variety less forgiving of exposed and dry locations, and can pitburn in the hot locations of California, benefits from planting in afternoon shade. Season Late August.
