Reine Claude de Bavay
Most famous variant of the Reine Claude doree or Reine Claude verte, this is valued in commercial orchards in France as a more regularly productive green gage than the type, because it needs no pollenizer. Several days later in season, slightly smaller and darker green when ripe, remains longer on the tree but ripens the crop over a longer period of time, a disadvantage in farming but a positive characteristic for the home. A seedling of Old Greengage produced at Mechelen by Major Esperen, called "mon soldat laboureur" by Napoleon, circa 1840. Grown by several American nurseries over the past century and sold by them as their "Green Gage" without further qualification, we at last offer it under its true name and type. Mid August. On Myro 29c.
