Waterloo

Waterloo

Also by Thomas Andrew Knight, Waterloo would have been Britain's (perhaps the World's) greatest cherry, but it produces fruits in singles along the length of the branch, making it unprofitable as a commercial fruit. Not a problem for the grower at home! A guigne, or rather, hybrid between a duke and bigarreau that approximates a guigne in texture, Waterloo is deep purple, near-black next the pit, luscious and juicy, rich beyond description. Wrote Bunyard: "so generally adjudged the best-flavored cherry that certain faults might be pardoned." End June - early July. On Mahaleb.
