Figs

Closest relative of the mulberry, and in form but a mulberry turned inside out, the fig is the northernmost form of the banyans of the tropics. A greenhouse fruit for most of Americans and Europeans, it grows rampantly for us. We reintroduced the many remarkable fig varieties to America in the 1980s, and our orchard is practically the type collection of valid varieties in the Western Hemisphere. We offer rooted cuttings (called 'figlets' locally) as the nursery industry has discovered that full-size dormant trees do not well survive the insults of digging and storage, and plants in smaller sizes and earlier stages recover and take off better. They are year-old cuttings rooted in perlite, and made available as they reach a size suitable for shipping. They are available throughout the year, in or out of leaf. that a fig is a tropical tree, sojourning far outside its usual home. Do not plant before danger of frost is past and never allow the roots to dry in the slightest.
