Characteristically top-shaped and modestly sized pear, with tough, durable skin marked with much russet. Flesh rather granular but outstandingly juicy, with the sweetest juice of any pear. Pick at leaf fall and cold store until mid January or a little before, when skin turns yellow. A common market pear within our memory but now vanished in favor of refrigerated Anjous, this pear has no equal in its season. Tree finely branching and twiggy, susceptible to fireblight but rarely dies from it. Season January. On Betulaefolia.
