There are places - Santa Clara Valley not among them - where the 'Old Greengage' does not perform reliably by itself and requires a pollenizer variety nearby. In such lands (Britain, Eastern States) where there is no room for more than one green gage, then 'Cambridge Gage' should be chosen. Discovered in Cambridgeshire in the 1920s, in Britain (not in France) it is considered "almost indistinguishable" from 'Old Greengage', though perhaps not remaining nearly so green when ripe. Same smallish size, coloring and season. See 'Old Greengage' for image. Early August. On Lovell.
