The USDA repository at Winters, California preserved a hedgerow of some 50 pomegranates, acquired over the years by the Department of Pomology at UC Davis from various sources in the state, chief of which was the former plant introduction station at Chico. Crab is among the pomegranate varieties selected from them and named By Prof. John Lovell of Hayward State College in 1984, on account of its high acid and small seeds. Fruits only middling in size, rather lumpy from outlines of carpels within, skin dark red. Aril large, juice very dark blackish red, high juice yield, decidedly acid. Seeds small, hard. Excellent culinary variety. Midseason, early October.
