Our largest fig. The generous breba crop of elongated, brown fruits arrests the attention of all fig lovers in July (not August, as name implies). Known as the Figue Banane in the south of France, where it is grown to amuse and impress, and Melanzane in Italy, because it resembles an eggplant in form. The pink flesh is of a sweetness that allows the eating of several without satiety. The main crop in autumn is profuse but of fruits of much lesser dimensions. Known and loved in France, Italy, Tunisia and Syria even.
