Low-chill nectarine suitable for locations both north and south. 'Pioneer' was produced in the same breeding program of Armstrong Nurseries that produced 'Silver Lode', 'Panamint' and 'Snow Queen' nectarines, and reached their same high standard before the Armstrong family would make available to the public. Fruits are very red, almost purple; flesh is deep yellow with much red around the pit. Flavor is very rich, high in sugar and in pleasing acid, a favorite in Southern California in the 1950s. Well adapted to inland and plain locations of Southern California, and elsewhere in the state. Early August. 400 hours. On Lovell.
